so.... it's been a while.

So.... It's been a while.

Over the last year I have got engaged, been to Dubai, got a new job, moved out, moved into my very first home and somewhere along those lines, lost my will to draw and be creative. Now I feel just about ready to get back on the saddle and get stuck in.

Just where to start? Well i have set myself the task of designing my wedding stationery, which I hope will be less stress and more fun, and totally worth it in the long run.

Our theme is pretty boho vintage, so I was thinking water colour with my usual patterny goodness.

Some new bits and bobs.

This was an illustration I did for Florence Massey's report on the FAD show. You can read it at Amelia's Magazine.

This was another one for the lovely Florence Massey. This time it was for her coverage of the Headonism Exhibition.  Read the article here.

Laki Mera Illustration!

This is another Amelia's Magazine illustration I did of a band called Laki Mera. I had never heard of them before, but after listening to their music while drawing I have become a fan. Check them out!

Birds of a feather.

Hi all,

So I drew this little fella the other day, and he had been sitting on my desk as I had no idea where to go with the drawing! But I decided to have a bit of a play and I quite like the outcome. All feedback much appreciated!

Calling all illustrators, designers, makers of beautiful things!!

So, over the last few months I have been working towards opening an online shop. Originally I was planning on selling things I made. While looking at some of the beautiful blogs and websites some of you have created I thought, why not build a shop where I could source some beautifully designed and made goods that you have created and sell them. This way you earn some money and your work is being seen, with out the hassle of dealing with the post office and admin side of things. I will also have a featured page with profiles of artists/designers/illustrators who's work I stock. I think this could work out to be a little community, where you can find inspiration from fellow creatives!

At the moment I am looking for beautifully made  illustrated gift cards, prints, fashion items, jewellery etc. to stock in my shop. If you are interested please send me an email with your blog/website showcasing some of your work and i'll be in touch with all the boring details!

sketchbook

I haven't put work up here in a while...I have been doing a bit more sketchbook work. It helps me to get ideas flowing, and it allows me to just draw what I love!

Right now, I am working on a few designs for prints, wrapping paper and tote bags!

O2 video....We're better connected

For this I was bringing to life the idea, 'we're better connected'. My idea was that we are all living our little lives, but something (in this case, Music) brings us together.
I am not a director nor am I a pro with editing software, but I hope you get the idea.

Who ever said it was easy?

So, It's been around two months since I packed in the the day job and decided to really give freelance illustration a go. This was a huge decision, as reality kicks in and you realise that you are completely relying on yourself. There will be no guaranteed wage at the end of the month. You only get paid if you manage to get work.... Who ever said that it's easy, well, they were lying!

It's a slow process of building up a portfolio with a variety of subject matter. At the end of the day you want to show that you can do 'anything'. Right? I have been trying to get more editorial illustration in my portfolio, as these types of work tend to be small quick jobs that can just cover gaps between bigger commissions. (you get some pocket money!)

My biggest obstacle is trying to figure out who I need to contact and where to send my work to. Also having the confidence to get in contact with the various publishers etc. I think I have improved confidence wise, but at the same time freelancing can be a lonely process. You need those good old days of the studio crits you had at university, just to get a different perspective on your work. I am currently trying to get illustrators and designers in the Cambridge (every where really!) area to just start a community, whether its a monthly catch up where we can have a coffee and just talk about what everyone is up to, or just get together and network.

This next month has a few things lined up (fingers crossed). As hard as it's been, so far I don't regret my decision! it's been the freedom i needed to really explore different creative routes and just take each day as it comes. I feel rather excited about the future.

I would love to hear what all you illustrators / creatives are doing at the moment. How are you finding freelancing? Tips? Ideas? anything! Lets get talking!

Ladytron review over at Amelia's Magazine

So here is another illustration I did for a review on the Ladytron gig, for Amelia's magazine. The photos I used as a reference, had a strong sense of mood and atmosphere and I tried to bring that alive in my illustration with colour and depth.

Fashion Illusration..

Annabel Luton

Holly Fowler

So, Amelia's Magazine needed a couple of illustrations for a review on the Central Saint Martins' Graduate fashion show. I created these two images. The clothing I was illustrating had a strong sense of pattern and print! Like always, I love to see what you all think. So don't be shy.

Getting started is always scary.

So I have been pretty quiet lately...I guess life has just got in the way a bit. Well that should all change now as I have thrown the towel in at the old day job and I am now focusing one hundred percent on my illustration work.

What better way to spend my first day of this new adventure than to do an illustration of a band called Bear Driver, who played at the Brainlove Festival in Brixton.

What do you think? i'm not sure this will be my final image but it's a start.......
